Interior Design Modern Hamptons style 2022

This Glen Iris Renovation Project is underway and I am excited to help this family create their dream home. It is going to be a beautiful home with a timeless quality and we are loving the decisions we have made so far.

Interior Design Project 2022

Interior Design Project:

When the client rang me to help with this renovation they already had a builder and the renovation had started. The family wants to build their dream home so I am helping them make choices they will love for a long time. We started by visiting suppliers of bench tops so we could make a decision for the kitchen & bathroom. The kitchen layout is complete and we have chosen the materials. We have also decided on oak floorboards throughout the home because this has a timeless quality.

We have chosen the paint colours for the inside and the outside and there is a nice flow to the colours. The inside walls will be a lovely light grey with fresh white windows, doors and windows for contrast.  The outside will be a mid colour grey with white windows and a lighter colour grey for trim and shingles.

Paint Colours 2022

I am also helping with furniture and accessories in some rooms so layout plans are currently being worked on. This is my layout for the family room so far and this is how I always start a design. The first thing I do is look at the layout of a room so I can get an idea of how big things like couches will need to be. Once I am happy with the layout I then start to source items to fill the room.

There are lots of decisions that need to be made along the way when renovating so I have been available to help my clients with these. This is going to be a beautiful home so I can’t wait to share some photos when the home is complete.

I hope you have enjoyed getting a sneak peek into a design I am currently working on.

Modern Hamptons laundry

What makes a dream laundry?

Modern Hamptons laundry

The laundry is the part of your home that no one really wants to be in because they are all about getting washing and ironing done and they also provide storage. I love designing laundries and my aim is to make them look really beautiful but also make sure they are a dream to use. I knew my client loved this one when she wanted to have a glass door from her home so everyone could see in. That was such a compliment but even though this was a beautiful laundry to look at I still thought it was best to have a solid door.

So that leads me to – What makes a dream laundry? Here I share my must haves that make it a dream laundry.

Must be beautiful
When I was designing this laundry I fell in love with the patterned tiles and I thought they would be best seen in the backsplash.   I then chose a grey tile for the floor that looks like a natural stone so it has a timeless quality. The bench top is Caesarstone and it brings all the colours together in a beautiful and practical material. Nothing says Hamptons like a shaker style door profile and a classic white gives the laundry a timeless style. The brass elements such as the sink, tap, hanging rail and handles help to add some warmth to the room and they contrast so nicely against the white shaker style cabinetry.

 Laundry Design

Plenty of Bench space & lots of Storage
It is so important to have plenty of bench space in a laundry so you can fold clothes and have somewhere to put them. This is quite a large laundry and putting the washer and dryer underneath the bench meant that there was heaps of bench space. We have plenty of storage in this laundry with a tall cupboard for the vacuum cleaner on one side and lots of overhead cupboards on the other side.
Hamptons Laundry
Laundry Cupboard
Hanging Rail
To have somewhere to hang clothes once they are ironed or dry we chose a beautiful hanging rail in a brass finish. This is where details are so important and this rail was electroplated so it would co-ordinate with the other brass details. To give enough space for a shirt to hang we allowed 1000mm above this bench top.
Pull Out Laundry Hampers
The clients wanted somewhere to put clothes so they could be sorted ready for washing so we have two pull out hampers under this bench that are a great size.
Fold Out Ironing Board
Ironing boards can be annoying to get in and out of a cupboard so this was a perfect solution to keep it out of the way but just fold it out for easy use. The iron is stored in a cupboard next to it and we have power points to plug the iron in.

Pull out Tap
When you are filling a bucket or a vase this pull out part comes in very handy so the tap can be extended.
LaundryThis laundry was a pleasure to design for my lovely clients and I know it will make washing clothes that little bit easier because not only does the laundry look beautiful but it has all the features for a dream laundry.I hope this helps to inspire you to create a laundry you will love, Andrea xx

Furniture with storage

What will Australian homes be like in 2021?

Last year was a tough year for a lot of people and self isolation made people spend more time at home than ever before. I’m a home body so I did this quite easily and it actually gave me some time to spend with my family and do some of those things around my home that I have been wanting to get done for ages. I painted my bedside tables, organised my pantry and many other areas so Marie Kondo would be proud. I even created an art gallery wall that I previously never had time to finish. See my gallery wall below – (I still want to add more art to it)

Art Gallery Wall

All this time at home has made our homes even more important to us because our homes represent who we are and how we feel so if we are not happy with our home then this can effect us negatively. I believe everyone deserves a home they love so my New Years resolution is to provide more tips and design ideas on my blog and social media so people can be inspired and create homes they love. Australians have a particular style so I thought I would start 2021 by sharing my ideas on how we will be decorating our homes this year.

2021 Australia homes

Australians love a relaxed home

I think Australians love homes that are welcoming with a relaxed vibe that suits our casual lifestyles. For example we don’t want a high gloss coffee table that we are worried our kids will ruin, instead we want to be able to put our feet on the coffee table and relax in our own home. That’s why I love to choose coffee tables made from recycled timbers like in the photo above that is a bit rustic. In 2021 I think we will continue to decorate our homes so they are comfortable to live in.

Beautiful & Practical Storage for our homes:

Our homes should be beautiful but also practical so this means they should suit the way we live and be a pleasure to live in. I believe storage is very important in any home so that items can be easily put away and accessible when we want to use them.  I like to choose furniture that has lots of storage like drawers or wicker baskets. In the lounge room on the left I chose a beautiful large wicker coffee table because it has loads of storage inside and it also looks great. The entrance in the right photo has a console with three drawers where things like keys, the garage door remote and all those little items we need near the front door can be put away easily. I also added a wicker chest underneath so the kids shoes can be stored in here to keep the entrance tidy.

Traditional Style Rug

Traditional Style Rugs

In 2021 I will be embracing traditional style rugs that are very practical because you can’t see all the day to day use on them because the patterns hides so much. I think traditional style rugs are an investment in a timeless piece that can be loved for many years. I think they look cosy and when mixed with modern furniture they create a home that looks collected over time.

Architectural Detail on walls and ceilings:

Plaster walls can look a little boring so adding trim on your walls to create wainscoting is an easy way to add character to your home. I also like to add timber panelling to walls and ceilings because even if it’s painted white it still gives texture and interest to the room. Easycraft is a popular choice for timber panelling. I also love adding beams to ceilings for a cosy look or a coffered ceiling can give a home a sense of luxury.

I am looking forward to helping lots of clients this year create their dream homes and I hope you are inspired to create yours.

Hamptons wallpaper- Bedroom

A room, and indeed a whole house, can be transformed through the use of Hamptons wallpaper. It’s one of the most effective ways of personalising a room and making it so much more interesting. Wallpaper adds a whole heap of character to your home and can be installed fairly quickly.

Hamptons Wallpaper

What is Hamptons Style Wallpaper?

Hamptons inspired wallpaper usually features stripes, geometric patterns or more traditional styles like the photo above. The right wallpaper in a Hamptons designed home will strike a balance between style and sophistication on one hand, and relaxed elegance on the other.

The wallpaper can be any colour but soft, neutral colours like beige and grey allow the wallpaper to set a base for the room. You can then add accent colours with accessories that are easily changed. The patterns are also usually timeless, so you won’t need to worry about updating the wallpaper and you can just change other aspects of the room when you feel like a refresh.

Different Ways to Use Wallpaper

I like to wallpaper an entire room because it seems to add so much more impact than just painted walls. However, if a client’s budget doesn’t allow for it, then wallpapering the top half of a wall and adding wainscoting is a great option. Another idea is to wallpaper a feature wall, for example, behind a bed. This can also be very effective.

Hamptons wallpaper- Bedroom

Adding Height and Length to a Room

In the example below, a striped wallpaper was used. Stripes can make a room look wider or give it the illusion of added height, depending on the direction it is installed. I love using a horizontal stripe for a modern Hamptons look. The neutral colours of the white and beige metallic stripes provide a great canvas for the picture gallery wall in this project.

Adding Interest to a Powder Room

Powder rooms are great for wallpapering because they are small. This means most people can fit it into their budget and it packs quite a punch, so you get great value for your money. Being a room made for guests, it’s also a great way to create a showstopper in your home.

This powder room was transformed into something very special by the use of a wallpaper with a metallic pattern that gives the sense of luxury. We were then able to bring the same patterned wallpaper through to the entrance to create a nice flow in the clients home.

Powder room wallpaper

Wainscoting is a term used to describe decorative panelling on a wall. It was originally used as insulation, to prevent damage to walls from rising damp. Nowadays, it is very much a decorative feature especially in Hamptons inspired homes. I helped renovate this powder room about four years ago. We added wainscoting and a beautiful wallpaper above it to personalise the room.

Grasscloth is a term used to describe wallpaper made from hand-woven strands of natural fibres. The fibres include hemp, jute, seagrass, arrowroot grass, bamboo and raffia. Grasscloth and wainscoting is a classic Hamptons combination.

It’s a great way to add texture to a room. In this example, I chose a a light neutral colour grasscloth and paired it with blue wainscoting for this children’s bedroom.

interior design lower plenty

It is important to note that seams are more visible with grasscloth, so if you are after a more seamless application, you may want to choose a different wallpaper. It is also harder to install than other wallpaper, so I always recommend application by a professional.

In this other bedroom project, we decided on a beautifully textured wallpaper above the wainscoting that looks very similar to grasscloth but the seems are not as visible. It’s actually a vinyl wallpaper so if it needs wiping down, it can be. I absolutely love this wallpaper and I think it is so elegant and timeless.

Modern Hamptons Home

I love the modern Hamptons style that has emerged from the traditional Hamptons look. The name “Hamptons” comes from the towns and villages on the eastern end of Long Island, Manhattan. Often the playground of the rich and famous, the area is known for its luxurious homes, many on the beach. Hamptons homes are noted for their white décor and relaxed but sophisticated beach style.

Modern Hamptons Home

What is the modern Hamptons style?

The modern Hamptons style puts a personal twist on the traditional, often through the addition of colour and more contemporary or casual pieces of decor. It suits our modern lifestyles, particularly here in Australia. We love the elegance of the traditional Hamptons look, but also recognise that our homes need to be lived in. Our homes are an extension of who we are and the modern Hamptons style allows us to achieve that individuality.

Real life examples of the modern Hamptons style

The following are projects I’ve completed for clients, where I’ve given the traditional Hamptons look a fresh look. The homes look elegant but not old fashioned. You’ll notice there’s a lot more colour too.

Essendon Family Home

This was a family/kitchen area in an Essendon project I worked on. As you can see, modern Hamptons is still timeless and classic but those traditional features are interwoven with more modern elements. For instance, the armchairs are quite traditional in shape, but they are paired with a more casual, modern sofa. The cushions on the armchairs also add a modern twist to the room, as does the abstract art on the wall.

The coffee table is another example of how traditional and contemporary are blended together to create a modern Hamptons style. It has a black, steel frame and is quite simple in shape and style, but the top is in traditional parquetry.

Lighting is another avenue for introducing personal style and a more relaxed feel. The timber beaded chandeliers over the island bench give it a more modern look. They also create a cosier ambience for the space.

Essendon Entrance

For the Essendon project entrance I used texture, as well as a mix of modern and traditional decor to give the space character.

The lamp shades have traditional linen tops, but the bottom of the lamps, while traditional in shape, have modern, reflective bases. The pendants I chose are also modern, but work well with the decorative lace cornice. They help elevate the space and give it personality.

The console is made from rustic or recycled timber. I added more texture to that part of the entrance with the introduction of a patterned rug and a wicker basket, which the clients can also use for storage.

Essendon guest bedroom

Guest Bedroom

I loved putting this guest bedroom together in a modern Hamptons style as well. While this space would have been practically all white in a traditional Hamptons home, the injection of colour adds vibrancy. Blue, white and beige work perfectly together – they are soft, complimentary colours and add interest without competing against each other.

I also paired traditional design rugs with modern bedside tables. The diamond shapes on the throw cushions and lamp base also pick up the diamonds in the rug, ensuring everything blends well together.

I further mixed traditional and modern elements by including a natural linen bedhead, coral prints with bamboo style frames and white plantation shutters. The addition of shutters in place of drapes or other window coverings can help move a room from a traditional Hamptons to a modern Hamptons style.

Modern Hamptons Style
Why black works in a modern Hamptons style

Considering that white is the overwhelming colour used in traditional Hamptons styling, some might think black is too far removed, even for a modern Hamptons look. But I think it absolutely works. By providing a strong contrast to white, using the opposite in black creates a stunning effect. It’s one that is elegant but also timeless.

Grey bedside table

My bedside tables were looking really worn and the stain was coming off and it was one of those jobs I never had time to do. While in lock down I decided to change the look of my bedsides by painting them grey in chalk paint. I absolutely love how they turned out so I thought I would share it with you. Now you should know that I have no patience at all and I’m not crafty so if I can do it, then it must be pretty easy. I usually start projects and give up on them because they don’t turn out like on the television shows but this one I actually completed.

Before: My bedside table was really worn and it looked horrible.

Step 1 – Remove the handles:

I removed the handles so the bedside was ready for me to sand it. I changed the handles recently so these ones were still good but if you don’t like your handles then this is a great way to freshen the look of your bedside tables.

Step 2 – Sand the drawers and Bedside cabinet:

I put some trestle tables up in our drive way so I could put the drawers on them and reach them easier without bending over. It was quite easy to sand the drawers and the cabinet but it did take about 30 minutes to sand one bedside cabinet.  I used a sander similar to this one form Mitre 10.

Step 3 – Painting & wax finish:

Once I sanded and wiped away the dust I was ready to paint. I chose a chalk paint in a can because I think it is so much easier to spray paint than to use a brush and it also gives you a better finish. I haven’t used a chalk paint before but I found this so easy to use so I would definitely recommend it. Remember I am not crafty so if it was too hard there is no way I would recommend it. This was really easy! The colour I chose was called ‘Riviera Grey’ and I really love it. I sprayed the first coat and left it to dry for about an hour and when it was touch dry I then applied the next coat.  Once this was dry I added a wax  which makes it feel smooth and it has a matt finish that also protects it.

bedside-table-make-over-paint bedside-table-paint

Step 4 – Put handles back on:

The last thing to do is to put back the handles on. I am so happy with how this bedside cabinet looks. I really love it. It has taken me a couple of hours all up but a lot of this time was waiting for the paint to dry so it’s a good project to do in an afternoon at home.

Yay I finished it and I love it!

bedside table

This is the refreshed bedside table in my bedroom. This change has made such a different to the look of my room and I am sorry I didn’t do it earlier. It really was quite an easy project and I’m thrilled with the end result.

I would love to hear from you about your experience in painting furniture.

I hope you are inspired to create a home you love.   Andrea. xxx

hamptons staircase make over

Do you have a staircase that is looking a bit boring and in need of a make over. If the answer is yes then I hope you are inspired by this recent staircase that I helped refresh for a lovely client in Donvale. The staircase was looking drab so I suggested adding some trim to the wall to create some architectural detail. This is easy to do and a great way to really make a difference to the look of the staircase.

ABOVE – Before: This stair case was boring and in need of a make over

staircase trim

The staircase had some trim that separated the lower floor to the top floor so we used that line as the top of the trim and created a grid pattern. This trim already had an undercoat on it which saves a bit of time and money on paint. We decided to keep the colour the same as the wall colour and we removed the carpet from the stairs.

Another way to freshen stairs is to paint the risers white which gives a more traditional look and lightens the space. We also wanted a bit of impact here so we chose to paint the balustrade black for some contrast and I think this gives the staircase a very elegant and timeless look.

hamptons staircase make over

To complete the make over we added a beautiful black console that looks amazing with the black balustrade and I love the contrast with the white walls. Some large hurricane candle holders are perfect for finishing touches and this art adds a bit of colour in a black frame leaning on the console for a relaxed look.

Let me know what you think of this staircase make over and I’d love to know what ideas you have to freshen a staircase. It’s amazing what a difference some small changes can make to your home so I hope you are inspired.

Australian Coastal Style

The Australian coastal style has a relaxed coastal vibe which is so popular today when people are decorating their homes. I love it because it suits the Australian lifestyle where we are quite casual in the way we live.

These are my favourite coastal items at the moment. This buffet that is a mix of wicker and timber is so stylish and this could be used as a side table in a family room or also in a bedroom. I love these timbers that are grey wash or weathered because they are so light and they look fresh and modern.

I am a blue girl so I really love this lamp that is a mixture of ink blue and muted pink with a leaf motif design on it that is really beautiful. The print helps to pick up the blue in the lamp and the cushions and it gives the room a definite beach style.

Wicker is always stylish and timeless so I love using it in my room designs and it also makes the room feel more cosy and not so formal which is nice. What about that couch. I love it because the design is so classic and the contrast piping is so stylish. This is a couch style and colour that you would never get sick of.

The lamp is fresh with the white base and the natural shade works well with the colours of all the timber and wicker. Top it of with a brass crab and some hydrangeas and I would be perfectly happy to spend a week end in this home.

I hope you are inspired, Andrea xx
